I am a middle school teacher with a room right next to the door to the courtyard. The door all the kids walk through multiple times per day. The door the fliers are hung on advertising every extra-curricular activity. As a result of my classroom door's proximity to the outside door, I'm the one who overhears student commentary about the fliers on the door as students walk through them each day. I'll spare you the quoted, brutal-honest truth straight from the mouths of the middle school collective, but let's just say that having overheard this commentary has made me determined to help every teacher inject some extra fun into their flier lineup!
Getting students to show up is half the challenge, and if your goal is to make middle school students want to show up, you've got to have eye-catching school fliers no matter what activity you're hosting.
It's got to make them stop in their tracks and do the reading and consideration head-tilt.
It’s got to pull them in. I hate to say it, but the Google doc in bold 24-point Arial font you've been printing and using probably isn’t going to be enough to rope in your students. Remember, they are social media users with less-than-desirable attention spans who want to be visually intrigued. That's why I made these Academic Bowl Meet / Meeting Fliers (Flyers)! Why the academic bowl team? The academic team is often overlooked on the door of fliers, unfortunately, and I want to help change that! So, I started my flier glow-up mission by making a set of fliers just for them!
Word-of-mouth is an amazing recruitment tool for extra-curricular activities, but you have to get enough kids in the door first to know how amazing your team, group, or club is before word of mouth can spread! So, regardless of whether or not you are an academic bowl team coach and purchase my set of fliers, ask yourself the following question when preparing your next flier, “What would make 12-year-old-me want to show up?”
I’ve also been working on these for your end-of-school parties! They are editable too. Just click on the photos below!
Have fun recruiting for and hyping up your teams, clubs, and organizations!
Until next time, Lauren
